Early and deep in my black-and-white, fully rendered era, pulled from the vaults. I put the heavy on this one. A dark apocalyptic scene of peeling paint and a crumbling society, where social commentary runs through it, but so does hope in the strange, like a small light caught in the twisting of shadows.
Characters and creatures still find fascination and life in the underground beneath America’s low places. Broken books, shattered records, glass, and lost communication. Traces of fights and struggles long gone.
It resonates even more loudly now, perhaps even more than when I first painted it, these American days. Observations from a lost state, and a kind of prayer from the lower level. May light still shine through that broken window.
