ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a storyteller. I am a native Houstonian and proud Texan. As a young boy, I was continually sketching and drawing. I studied film and animation at the University of Texas, graduating with a degree in Radio TV Film.

As a creator and an artist, I speak through my work with a unique voice. I have spent years unearthing the proper images in my mind to share these stories. I seek ways to express subtle human emotions that are not limited to my own personal experience, but also translated into something universal. By blending the American cartoon character and fine art I have discovered an accessible and relatable window. My paintings are humorous, full of discovery and wonder, adventurous, reminiscent, relatable, resilient, and courageous. My intent is to visually connect with the viewers in ways that intersect their stories and mirror feelings they are often unable or unwilling to express.

As a “Retro-Animation Artist”, I have created an original and reoccurring cast of characters that harkens back to 1930’s and 40’s American animation. My characters serve as symbols or icons within the medium of fine art, enabling them to display universal charm and the viewer’s unlimited broader perspective. Although my characters emote distinct personalities, they exemplify the “every man.” To be clear, my intent is to bring viewers into a world of discovery, imagination and wonder, while allowing them to see parts of themselves in the ape brothers Rig and Rex, in the resilient girl, East, and in the poetic tin man, Apollos.

Keeping my work fluid and open serves as a laboratory for experimentation and a springboard for new ideas within the world of my characters. I am deeply inspired by the found and used parts of society. The settings for my work, the underpinnings and fields in which my characters find themselves, are built from the beautiful remains of books left unread, fabrics once cherished and images long forgotten. Such elements lead the viewer on a visual quest. Each fragment serves to reveal a deeper poetic layer to the story being told.

My characters serve as guides to a forgotten existence, often poking fun at the rebellious kid in all of us. Their ramshackle world resonates with the fearlessness of adolescence and reveals the wonder of things discovered. The stories I tell through painting evoke satire, imagination and a collective nostalgia. They unite the past and present by redefinition -- fresh and new, yet as inviting as a long-forgotten cap gun, a frayed comic book or a grandfather’s pocketknife.

I consider myself privileged and blessed to interpret and render the images of my imagination.  As I continue my journey, my heart and vision remain forever with storytelling.
