Alike the razor sharp blade of the katana are the words the samurai speaks. On his metal lips, “Bushido,” the way of warriors. This moral code of honor dictates his every move. They are seven virtues; integrity, respect, heroic courage, honor, compassion, honesty/sincerity and duty/loyalty.

The Kanji characters (Japanese letters) above the tin man’s head define him. “Samurai” and “Fox” (Kitsune). The Kitsune or “fox” have a long and mythical history in Japanese folklore. They are intelligent beings possessing paranormal abilities. They are magical in their craftiness, faithful guardians, shape shifters and messengers. As the legends tell, the more powerful and wise the Kitsune the more tails it has.

This painting stands poised with narrative energy, rich painterly colors and abundant with texture. To those who commissioned this piece, the fox tails represent their two sons, full of warrior potential and brimming with mischief.
